Local food systems aren't just for food!
Tarbes, a town awarded the “4 Fleurs” designation by the CNVVF, is a concrete example of how cities can integrate nature to improve their residents’ quality of life while respecting the environment.
All of the plants and flowers that adorn Tarbes City Hall are grown locally in the municipal greenhouses.
The municipal greenhouses produce more than 100,000 annual seedlings. Mayor Gérard Trémège emphasizes the importance of this space—a true experimental laboratory—not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its crucial role in the ecological transition. Workshops on greening cemeteries and sidewalks and on biological plant protection are also offered at this unique facility.
The city of Tarbes now has 22,000 trees to provide cool shade during the summer months and 83 hectares of green spaces, or 20 square meters per resident.
