Located on the Aquitaine coast, the town of Mimizan is taking steps to promote sustainable development, with a particular focus on preserving its 10 kilometers of coastline. In honor of World Oceans Day, here’s a look at some of the initiatives the town has implemented to protect this particularly fragile environment:
➡️ Dune and beach conservation: Mimizan uses natural techniques, such as annual mulching with pine branches, to prevent erosion while protecting local ecosystems.
➡️ Installation of tide pools: As part of its Agenda 21 initiative, Mimizan has installed tide pools on its beaches to encourage visitors to actively participate in cleaning up the coastline.
➡️ Combating invasive species: Manual cleanup operations are regularly organized to remove invasive plants and other debris, in partnership with local organizations. These efforts are essential not only for raising awareness but also for maintaining biodiversity and the health of aquatic ecosystems.
➡️ Coastal management: The municipality has developed a local strategy to address erosion and coastal flooding. The banks of the Courant de Mimizan are being reinforced to protect both homes and human activities without creating new structures, thereby limiting the environmental impact.
Awarded the 4 Fleurs designation by the CNVVF since 1994, Mimizan received the Fleur d’Or in 2020, a national award given to municipalities that demonstrate exemplary practices.
